RECOMMENDATION It is recommended that the City Council approve the naming of two new City parks, Settlers Park and Meier Park. BACKGROUND City Council Resolution 99-89 provides the procedures for the naming of city-owned facilities and rights of way. Such resolution provides as follows: 1. The naming of any city-owned facility or right-of-way must be approved by a vote of not more than one dissenting vote of all members of the City Council then holding office and any alteration or name change of an existing city-owned facility or right-of-way must be approved by a unanimous vote of all members of the City Council then holding office. 2. The City Council must hold a public hearing a minimum of two weeks before final action on naming or changing the name of a public facility or right-of-way. The resolution naming or changing the name of a public facility or right-of-way may only be introduced by a member of the City Council. Councilman Kaptain has requested that the City Council consider the naming of two City Parks. City staff has worked with the developers of Providence and West Point Garden subdivisions to design and develop parks that will meet the needs of the neighborhood, as well as the City's overall parks system. Discussion took place at recent Parks and Recreation Advisory Board meetings regarding the naming of these two parks. The Parks and Recreation Advisory Board recommends that the park located in the Providence subdivision, at the intersection of Sutton and Cranston Roads, be named Settlers Park. The Parks r Public Hearing on the Naming of Two New Parks March 7, 2008 Page 2 and Recreation Advisory Board also recommends that the park located in West Point Gardens subdivision, at the intersection of Hyde Park Court and Garden Drive, be named Meier Park COMMUNITY GROUPS/INTERESTED PERSONS CONTACTED Residents that attended the park planning meetings and residents of Providence subdivision. FINANCIAL IMPACT There is no cost to the City as the developers will be paying for and erecting the park signs. LEGAL IMPACT None ALTERNATIVES 1. The City Council may choose to approve the naming of the parks as recommended. 2. The City Council may choose not to approve the naming of the parks as recommended.
