06-300 Resolution No. 06-300 RESOLUTION URGING THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES AND THE UNITED STATES CONGRESS TO ENACT AND ENFORCE IMMIGRATION LAWS WHEREAS, the United States of America was founded and built by immigrants; and WHEREAS,the City of Elgin,Illinois is a diverse community which has in the past and will continue to welcome those who seek to better their lives and those of their children by legally immigrating to the United States; and WHEREAS,immigration and the enactment and enforcement of immigration laws has been the longstanding responsibility of the federal government; and WHEREAS, securing our nations borders is a matter of national security; and WHEREAS, the failure by the federal government to secure our borders and to enact and enforce comprehensive and equitable immigration laws has resulted in growing burdens on the states and local governments including, but not limited to, increased burdens on local schools and increased costs for the provision of health care services; and eitk WHEREAS, the failure of the federal government to secure our borders and to enact and enforce comprehensive and equitable immigration laws causes distrust within our community between citizens and those who have recently immigrated, whether legally or illegally, and undermines the respect for the rule of law in our society. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ELGIN, ILLINOIS, that the members of the City Council of the City of Elgin hereby urge the President of the United States and the United States Congress,regardless of party affiliation,to place the highest priority and to proceed forthwith in enacting and enforcing comprehensive immigration laws which secure our nations borders,provide security for citizens and legal residents of the United States and which address the growing number of illegal immigrants currently within our borders.
