• ACCEPTING THE PROPOSAL OF THE ELGIN SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
FOR THE 1990 SUMMER OUTDOOR CONCERT
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ELGIN, ILLINOIS,
that Larry Rice, City Manager, be and is hereby authorized and directed to accept the
proposal on behalf of the City of Elgin of the Elgin Symphony Orchestra for the, 1990
summer outdoor concert, a copy of which is attached hereto and made a part hereof by
reference.

City of Elgin Parks and Recreation Department ("Sponsor") and
The Elgin Symphony Orchestra ( "Artist" ) .
The Artist is hereby engaged to perform at the location and on
the date and time enumerated :

If there is rain on 7/22/90 , the ESO will provide, to the best of
its ability, the full number of musicians (65) on 7/23/90 as
agrees to in the original proposal dated 9/13/89.
The Artist agrees, also, to participate and perform in rehearsals
for the above performance at the location and on the date
enunerated belo%.:

In return for the Artist's services, the Sponsor agrees to pay a
gross sum of $11 ,000 (eleven thousand) dollars toward the
concert; of which $9,614 will be used to cover costs of orchestra
musicians fees, conductor fees, guest artist fees, operations and
librarian services, instrument rental, music rental or purchase,
and cartace. The remaining $1 ,386 will be used by the orchestra
for the purposes of advertisine and promotion of the concert.
This sum is to be paid by check, drawn to the order of the
Artist, either upon completion of the performance, or mailed to
the Artist on the first tusiness day following the performance.

SUBJECT: Elgin Symphony Orchestra Summer Concert
PURPOSE :
To request Council approval of the contract for the 1990 Summer
• Outdoor Concert featuring the Elgin Symphony Orchestra in the Wing
Park Bandshell .
BACKGROUND:
Councilman John Walters contacted the Elgin Symphony Orchestra late
last summer and requested they prepare a proposal to the City for a
series of free summer concerts to be held in the City parks during
1990 . Councilman Walters asked that the Symphony present ideas,
rationale , and cost for these performances ; the written proposal was
received by the Parks and Recreation Department in September.
One outdoor concert was approved in the Recreation Division 1990
Budget . The concert will take place at the Wing Park Band Shell on
Sunday, July 22 at 7 : 00 p.m. with the rain date scheduled the next
day. The program will include familiar popular works as well as
well-known classics .
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
The $11 ,000 is allocated in the Recreation Division' s miscellaneous
contractual services budget (082-875-3901) .
RECOMMENDATION:
The -?gin Parks and Recreation Department staff recommends the City
Coun-_1 approve the contract for $11 , 000 for the 1990 Summer
Outdoor Concert featuring the Elgin Symphony Orchestra.
