HomeMy WebLinkAboutG16-87 Ordinance No. G 16-87 AN ORDINANCE PROVIDING FOR THE MEMBERSHIP OF THE BOARD OF FIRE AND POLICE COMMISSIONERS WHEREAS, the City of Elgin is a home rule unit within the meaning of the 1970 Constitution of the State of Illinois; and WHEREAS, a home rule unit may exercise any power and perform any function pertaiing to its government and affairs; and WHEREAS, the membership of the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners is a matter pertaining to the government and affairs of the City of Elgin. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ELGIN, ILLINOIS: Section I. That Section 3.08.010 of Chapter 3.08 of the Elgin Municipal Code, 1976, as amended, is hereby amended to read as follows: "3.08.010 Established. There shall be a board of fire and police commissioners which shall consist of five members whose terms shall be for three years. Such members shall be appointed by the mayor, with the consent of the city council. Of the five members of the board, one shall be a member of the employee class, one from the employing class, one shall be a representative citizen not identified with either the employee or employing groups, not less than one shall be a female and not less than one shall be a member of a racial minority as that term is used by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. In case of any conflict with any provision of the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners Act (III. Rev. Stat., 1985, Ch. 24, Par. 10-1-2.1 et seq.), the provisions of this ordinance shall control."
