AN ORDINANCE
REGULATING STREET NUMBERS
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ELGIN, ILLINOIS:
Section 1. That Section 16.04.260 entitled "Street Numbers Required"
be and is hereby added to the Elgin Municipal Code, as amended, to read
as follows:
"16.04.260 Street Numbers Required.
All lots, buildings and structures within the corporate
limits of the City shall be assigned a street number or if
within the Elgin postage delivery area may request a street
number in accordance with the numbering system established
by the Department of Community Development."
Section 2. That Section 16.04.261 entitled "Size and Type of Street
Numbers" be and is hereby added to the Elgin Municipal Code, as amended,
to read as follows:
16.04.261 Size and Type of Street Numbers.
Street numbers shall be not less than five inches in
height and be in a contrasting color from the structure.
Street numbers shall not be in script."
Section 3. That Section 16.04.262 entitled "Location of Street
Numbers" be and is hereby added to the Elgin Municipal Code, as amended,
to read as follows:
"16.04.262 Location of Street Numbers
A. No person shall prior to the start of construction of
any structure on vacant land fail to post in a prominent loca-
tion visible from the adjoining street the temporary assigned
street number for that property.
B. No person shall occupy any structure unless the assigned
street number is placed next to the front entrance in a prominent
location and visible from the adjoining street. If that location
is not readily visible from the adjoining street, the number shall
be placed elsewhere in close proximity to the front entrance where
it is not obstructed by fences, bushes, trees, walls or other
objects.
C. The street number of multiple family dwellings with
common entrances shall be placed in a prominent location in
proximity to the entrance and visible to the adjoining street
or parking area. Each dwelling unit shall have the numbers or
letters assigned to that unit posted on the exterior doors of
each unit."
Section 4. That this ordinance shall be in full force and effect
ten days after its passage and publication in pamphlet form.
