HomeMy WebLinkAboutT2-79 Ordinance No. T2-79 tow AN ORDINANCE PERTAINING TO A PRIMARY ELECTION AND MUNICIPAL ELECTION FOR THE OFFICES OF MAYOR AND THREE COUNCILMEN FOR THE CITY OF ELGIN, KANE AND COOK COUNTIES, ILLINOIS WHEREAS, the statutes of the State of Illinois provide for a regular municipal election to be held on the third Tuesday in April, 1979, being April 17, 1979, for the offices of Mayor and three Councilmen for the City of Elgin, Kane and Cook Counties, Illinois; and WHEREAS, the statutes of the State of Illinois provide that a primary election for the nomination of such offices shall be held on the last Tuesday of February of 1979, being February 27, 1979, unless not more than two persons are entitled to be printed on the primary ballot as a candidate for the nomination for each office to be filled at said general municipal election; and WHEREAS, the time provided by law for filing petitions for nomination of such candidates has passed and eight such petitions were filed for nomination as candidates for the office of Councilman and it will be necessary to con- duct a primary election to determine the nominees for the three offices of Councilman in the City of Elgin, Illinois, to be filled at the regular municipal election to be held on April 17, 1979; and WHEREAS, not more than two candidates have been nominated for the office of Mayor. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ELGIN, ILLINOIS: Section 1. That a primary election shall be held in the City of Elgin, Illinois, for the nomination of candidates for the election to the office of Mayor and Councilman of the City of Elgin, on February 27, 1979. Section 2. That there shall be a regular municipal election for the City of Elgin, in said City, on the 17th day of April, 1979, at which time there shall be elected a Mayor and three Councilmen. Section 3. That the City Clerk shall cause to be prepared ballots for the said primary election and shall place thereon the names of the persons filing proper petitions. for nomination for the office of Mayor and for the three offices of Councilman; such ballots shall comply with the State elec- tion laws and the laws relating to the managerial form of municipal government as set forth in the Illinois Municipal Code. Section 4. That the City Clerk shall also cause to be prepared ballots for the regular municipal election and place thereon the names of the persons subsequently declared to be the nominees for the office of Mayor and for the three offices of Councilman mentioned and the nominees for the office rek of Mayor; such ballots shall comply with the State election laws and the laws relating to the managerial form of municipal government as set forth in the Illinois Municipal Code. Section 5. That said primary election and said regular municipal elec- tion shall be held in all the voting precincts of the City of Elgin, Illinois, established by ordinance, and that the polling places and judges and clerks of said elections shall be hereafter established by ordinance. Section 6. That the City Clerk, be and hereby is, directed to cause notice of said primary election and said regular municipal election in the form provided by statute, to be published in a newspaper of general circula- tion of said City, not more than thirty (30) nor less than fifteen (15) days prior to the date of each of said primary and general municipal elections.
