HomeMy WebLinkAbout98-157 • • Resolution No. 98-157 RESOLUTION APPROVING GRANT RECIPIENTS UNDER THE NEIGHBORHOOD IMPROVEMENT GRANT PROGRAM WHEREAS, the Neighborhood Improvement Grant Program has been established to provide financial assistance and incentives for neighborhood groups and organizations in the development and implementation of projects benefitting their respective neighborhoods; and WHEREAS, in 1998 applications have been made by seventeen citizen groups for thirty-four projects under the Neighborhood Improvement Grant Program; and WHEREAS, said applications have been reviewed and recipients selected by the City Council . City of Elgin Agenda Item No. .7 0: May 15, 1998 TO: Mayor and Members of the Council FROM: Joyce Parker, City Manager SUBJECT: Neighborhood Improvement Grant Program PURPOSE The purpose of this memorandum is to provide the Mayor and members of the City Council with information to consider applications for the 1998 Neighborhood Improvement Grant Program (NIGP) . BACKGROUND Funding for the third year of the neighborhood grant program was included in the 1998 budget for $70 , 000 . Neighborhood improvement programs have been successful in many other cities in stabilizing and enhancing residential areas . A summary of the 1996 and 1997 grant projects status is provided as Attach- ment A for review. The competitive program helps neighborhood groups identify priorities, work collaboratively on developing solutions, and provide a means to realize completion of neighborhood priori- ties . For the 1998 program, brochures were sent out advertising the request for submissions in February. The deadline for appli cations was April 29, 1998 . There were 34 applications received from 17 citizen groups . Submission overviews are attached. Each request for City support is within the maximum amount in the program guidelines of $15, 000 per project . The requests for funding total $290, 521 . For the last two years, the City Council selected the projects for award at the Committee of the Whole meeting. The enabling ordinance for the program provides criteria for selection (attached) . 5rFINANCIAL IMPACT r Funding for the program is included in the 1998 budget in the amount of $70, 000 (account number 275-0000-791 . 92-32) .
