HomeMy WebLinkAbout25-144 Resolution No. 25-144 RESOLUTION ESTABLISHING AN HONORARY STREET NAME OF CORPORAL ORTIZ COURT FOR ALICE COURT WHEREAS, a formal application to provide for the establishment of the honorary street name of Corporal Ortiz Court for Alice Court was submitted to the City of Elgin, sponsored by City Council Member Rosamaria Martinez; and WHEREAS, U.S. Army Corporal Eriverto Ortiz was killed in the Korean War on September 22, 1950, at the age of 27; and WHEREAS, Corporal Ortiz was a member of Easy Company, 2nd Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division; and WHEREAS,Corporal Ortiz' remains were discovered in early 1951, but they could not be positively identified until 2018 when the U.S. Department of Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency used dental, anthropological, and mitochondrial DNA analysis to provide definitive identification; and WHEREAS, for his bravery and service, Corporal Ortiz was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Service Star, the Army Gold Conduct Medal, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Republic of Korea War Service Medal, and the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation.; and WHEREAS, Corporal Ortiz was laid to rest on October 28, 2024, in Bluff City Cemetery with full military honors, after 73 years of missing-in-action status; and WHEREAS, the City of Elgin is extremely proud that the family of Corporal Ortiz has chosen Elgin to be his final home; and WHEREAS, the Mayor and members of the City Council wish to extend the appreciation and esteem of all Elgin citizens for Corporal Ortiz' outstanding service to his country; and WHEREAS, the Mayor and members of the City Council have determined that it is appropriate to formally recognize Corporal Ortiz. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ELGIN, ILLINOIS, that there is hereby established the honorary street name of Corporal Ortiz Court along Alice Court. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that an honorary street sign shall be placed at the southeast corner of Alice Place and Alice Court, designating Alice Court as Corporal Ortiz Court. s/David J.
