SUBJECT: Disposition of a Bull Elk and White Tail Buck
to the Morton Manor, Wayne Township, Il
PURPOSE
The purpose of this memorandum is to provide the Mayor and members
of the City Council with information to consider the disposition of
a male elk and a male white tail deer to the Morton Manor, Wayne
Township, Il .
BACKGROUND
eft. Staff has researched population control measures for the Lords Park
Zoo. The current over-population of animals makes it necessary to
remove selected animals from the herd. The Parks Department has
contacted several local public zoos and wildlife sanctuaries that
may be interested in our bison and elk. This is being done for two
reasons . The first is to maintain blood lines as the daughters and
sons of the current bull elk are reaching breeding age. The second
reason is to maintain the correct number of animals for the pen
size . The Parks Department is in the process of writing a request
for qualifications for animal managers who may be interested in
additional animals from our herd.
The Morton Manor is a private reserve consisting of 146 acres.
Rebecca Mountain is the caretaker in charge of the management of
their elk herd and white tail deer herd. These animals will not be
sold and there is no hunting allowed on the property. Morton Manor
will pay for the transportation of these animals to their property.
