SUBJECT: Disposition of Elk to the City of Aurora
PURPOSE
The purpose of this memorandum is to provide the Mayor and members
of the City Council with information to consider the disposition of
a female elk to the City of Aurora Zoo.
BACKGROUND
Staff have researched population control measures for the Lords
F Park Zoo. The current over-population of animals makes it necessary
to remove selected animals from the herd. The Parks Department has
contacted several local public zoos and wildlife sanctuaries that
maybe interested in our bison and elk. This is being done for two
reasons. The first is to maintain blood lines as the daughters and
sons of the current bull elk are reaching breeding age . The second
reason is to maintain the correct number of animals for the pen
size. The Parks Department is in the process of writing a request
for qualifications for animal managers who may be interested in
additional animals from our herd.
The City of Aurora Zoo was the only Public facility interested in
our zoo animals. Randy Johnson, City of Aurora Zoo Manager, would
like to have a female elk from our herd to help establish their
herd. The sedating and transporting of the female elk will be done
by Steve Hilden, a specialist in transporting animals, at a cost to
the City of Elgin of $150 .
