RESOLUTION
NAMING THE CENTRE OF ELGIN THE EDWARD SCHOCK CENTRE OF ELGIN
(100 Symphony Way)
WHEREAS, Edward Schock was elected to the office of councilman of the City of Elgin in
the municipal election on April 20, 1993,and was sworn into the office of councilman on April 28,
1993; and
WHEREAS, Councilman Edward Schock was thereafter re-elected to the office of the
councilman of the City of Elgin in 1997; and
WHEREAS, Councilman Edward Schock was elected to the office of mayor of the City of
Elgin in the municipal election on April 13, 1999, and was sworn into the office of mayor on April
28, 1999; and
WHEREAS,Mayor Edward Schock was re-elected to the office of mayor of the City of Elgin
in 2003 and in 2007; and
WHEREAS, Mayor Edward Schock's determined leadership helped lead the City of Elgin
through a period of unprecedented growth and revitalization which included numerous city projects
supported by Mayor Schock including the building of the new police station,the building of two new
fire stations, the acquisition of the new public works building, the city's dramatic westward
expansion,improvements to the city's riverfront,revitalization of the downtown,the building of the
city's new recreation center the Centre of Elgin,Festival Park,the development of the Highlands and
Bowes Creek Golf Courses,the creation of numerous programs to improve and revitalize the city's
neighborhoods and for economic development in the city; and
WHEREAS, as a newly elected councilman Mayor Schock was instrumental in the
establishment of a code enforcement department and the subsequent adoption of an ordinance
requiring inspections of residential rental properties which initiatives resulted in significant positive
changes to the city's neighborhoods; and
WHEREAS, prior to being elected to the city council Mayor Edward Schock served as a
member of the city's Zoning and Subdivision Commission,the city's Planning Commission and as
President of Neighborhood Housing Services; and
WHEREAS, Mayor Edward Schock is a former School District U-46 school teacher and
school administrator who retired in 2003 from School District U-46 after 33 years of service in the
city's schools; and
WHEREAS,Mayor Edward Schock's 12 year tenure as mayor of the City of Elgin equals the longest
continuous tenure for the office of mayor for the City of Elgin; and
WHEREAS, Mayor Edward Schock is a life-long resident of Elgin who has been a
determined leader and an enthusiastic advocate for the city and who has dedicated himself to a life of
public service for his beloved city; and
WHEREAS, the City of Elgin wishes to express its sincere and warm appreciation and
esteem to Mayor Edward Schock who has been a faithful and diligent public servant and steward for
the City of Elgin; and
WHEREAS, the city council of the City of Elgin has determined that an appropriate
recognition and honor for Mayor Edward Schock is to name the city's recreation center the Centre of
Elgin at 100 Symphony Way after Mayor Edward Schock to honor his legacy of service and
leadership and to inform and remind future generations of who Edward Schock is.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
ELGIN, ILLINOIS, that the City of Elgin hereby extends it sincere and warm appreciation and
esteem to Mayor Edward Schock for Mr. Schock's outstanding service to the City of Elgin as
councilman and mayor for the City of Elgin.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ELGIN,
ILLINOIS, that in recognition and in honor of Mayor Edward Schock's outstanding service to the
City of Elgin that the City of Elgin hereby designates and names the Centre of Elgin at 100
Symphony Way, Elgin, Illinois, "the Edward Schock Centre of Elgin".
