3. The current railings on the front porch must be removed.
4. A new railing shall be constructed on each side of the front porch in conformance
with the design provided by staff in Exhibit G.
Millikan: Staff informed owner of the need for shoe molding to be added to base
wrapping; and the post caps needs to be modified too. Drawings D-2 shows the current
details of the porch.
Wiedmeyer: Spindles are oblong, looks more like a deck than a porch railing. Spindle
should be either round or turned squares. Square would be most appropriate.
Roxworthy: Post would not typically be against a wall. Usually a11/2 post is placed
against the structure.
Miller: Unclear what we are approving on the COA?
Kevin Beers (owner): Was unsure what/how to describe the replacement porch.
Miller: Turned spindles are not appropriate with the bracket style for this house. The
balustrades are a problem. Plainest substitute possible would be appropriate: square (90
degrees) or a sawn repeating pattern. Recessed panels on the base would be better too.
Briska: Cap style should be flatter, simple design.
Stroud: Suggest the owner return with an appropriate design.
Millikan: Staff will work with applicant for correct design. Using the porch drawing
from the previous agenda item (63 Villa St), only a few details would need to be added.
Motion made by Commissioner Roxworthy to table item for additional information.
The motion was seconded by Commissioner Waden.
The motion passed unanimously.
491 Division St.—Replace overhead garage door
The property owner has submitted a COA application to replace the overhead garage
door. The current door is deteriorated at the bottom and does not fit squarely in the
frame. It is a flip-up style door and does not open properly. The garage sits past the rear
line of the house and but is visible from the public right-of-way (when a car is not parked
in the driveway).
The owner is proposing to replace the current door with a steel insulated door that will
have raised panels and a row of windows. The contractor was asked to provide details on
the specific door but staff has provided a sample of a door that could be approved.
The property owner is a recipient of a 2007 75/25 Historic Architectural Grant for several
projects including re-roofing, painting, replacement storm windows and storm doors, and
the garage door.
