Due to a lack of quorum, the regularly scheduled meeting for the Elgin I luman
Relations Commission was not held.
The following information was discussed among the members present.
a. Helga Stafford distributed binders detailing Community 2000 Task Force. She
felt the present task force was not a diverse group and did not represent the
community. Helga requested that the Human Relations Commission review the
materials and respond to the conflict between the Hispanic community and the Elgin
Courier. Cmmr. Wars related one of the Human Relations Commission's goals is to
educate the community on the benefits of multiculWriallStr Cmmr Wars feels a special
meeting needs to be held to develop an action plan, and then call a press conference
to address the issues. Cmmr. Armenta felt the first action needed to resolve the conflict
would be to hold a hearing for residents to voice their objections.
b. Cmmu Feliciano provided feedback on the Hispanic Heritage Parade. Cesar.
Feliciano also reported that the Herald called the police department to ask if the police
were anticipating any problems at the parade,
c. Cmmu Rivera reparled on the Spanish translation of the Human Relations
• Commission brochure. Cesar. Rivera informed the group that on November 14th
School District U46 will be hosting a conference for Hispanic parents.
