HomeMy WebLinkAboutCCDATE=AUGUST 26, 2008 (9) Design Review Subcommittee—August 26, 2008 Page 9 of 12 256 E Chicago Street—Reface school addition, parking lot improvements The Architect has submitted a Certificate of Appropriateness to remodel the exterior wall of the 1960's classroom addition to the original structure. Additionally, site improvements at the rear of the building are planned. Existing and proposed elevations are provided for comparison. This project received preliminary approval from the subcommittee in 2006. Elgin Design Guideline Manual Specifications: New Commercial Construction A. should be compatible with the original building in scale, proportion and rhythm of openings, and size. S. should be of exterior materials similar to the existing building. Staff Recommendation: Staff recommends approval of the COA. Paris Donchoo(Pastor) and Beth Mitchell(Renovation Committee Member)were also in attendance at tonighCs meeting. Millikan: Previously brought to commission as a concept. Stroud: Concept was previously accepted as a concept only. Sriska: Will there be signage on the building? Chuck Castle (Architect): Samples brought. Similar to presentation of 2 years ago. Sign currently on the cast side in metal raised letting. Wanting to bring sign down closer to street level. Stone product include of"rocked" stone accents, base/water table and part of the sign. Text to be etched into a smooth stone. Zoning approval will be reviewed too. Walden: Current ordinance allows for 80 square feet of wall graphics on a maximum of three elevations for this site, due to proximity to the street. Complete review done when the project is submitted for the sign pennit. Wiedmeyer: More information available about the brick proposed? Castle: Similar in size and texture to the existing. Slightly darker in color. Making the classroom wing darker will make it appear as if it is set back. Joints will be the same. Sample wall will be completed for the commission to see. Existing tower has a slightly darker color then the church. This addition will be darker than the church, but lighter than the tower. Motion made by Commissioner Roxworthy to approve as submitted. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Miller. The motion passed unanimously. 853 N Grove Street—Install handrail The property owner has submitted a Certificate of Appropriateness to replace the railings and column on the front porch. The existing railings were removed before staff could
