HEATING COMMISSION
MINUTES
January 31, 2012
1. CALL TO ORDER:
The meeting was called to order by Pat Hudgens at 2:08 p.m. in the first floor conference
room.
ROLL CALL:
Members Present: Jim Biewer and Pat Hudgens
Members Absent: Richard Beebe
Staff Present: Steve Bone, Raoul Johnston, Antonio Lopez, Dave Mulcahy,
and Marc Mylott
2. MINUTES:
A motion was made by Jim Biewer to approve the June 15, 2011 minutes, seconded by
Pat Hudgens. Motion passed unanimously.
3. NEW BUSINESS:
Raoul mentioned there is an Illinois Energy Codes Free Training available for the
commission members or anyone interested. Trainings to be held in March in Rock
Valley College in Rockford, April at Harper College in Palatine, and May at McHenry
County College in Crystal Lake. Raoul encouraged members to sign up quickly, if
interested.
Raoul stated the 2012 International Mechanical Code Section 101.2—Section 1401.2
regarding the International Fuel Gas code (IFGC) and State of Illinois Plumbing Code
will not be reviewed.
4. REVIEW/DISCUSS CHANGES TO 2012 IMC
1. Table 403.3 Minimum ventilation rates: Discussion was raised on minimum
ventilation rates. Pat Hudgens brought up not recalling seeing the garage count and
exhaust systems being required for each home. Raoul stated it could be amended to
refer to residential code for residential purposes. It was decided to by members that
the section on garage ventilation will be discussed when the International Residential
Code is reviewed.
2. Sections 502.4 Stationery storage battery systems, 502.5 Valve-regulated lead-
acid batteries in cabinets: It was decided by members that no changes need to be
made to this section.
3. Sections 506.3.7.1 Grease reservoirs: It was decided by members that no changes
need to be made to this section.
4. Section 506.3.8 Grease duct cleanouts and openings: It was decided by members
that no changes need to be made to this section.
5. Section 506.3.9 Grease duct horizontal cleanouts: It was decided by members that
no changes need to be made to this section.
6. Section 506.3.10 Underground grease duct installation: It was decided by
members that no changes need to be made to this section.
7. Section 506.3.11.2 Field-applied grease duct enclosure: Pat Hudgens drew a hand
drawing and asked Dave Mulcahy and Antonio Lopez if they know about the
requirement of wrap has to be continuous for clearance reduction and ventilated curb
for grease duct. Marc Mylott asked Pat Hudgens if this was something that the code
required and Pat said yes somewhere in the section. After a brief discussion it was
decided no changes needed to be made.
8. Section 507.2.1 Type I hoods: After a brief discussion on UL label members
decided no changes need to be made to this section.
9. Section 507.2.1.1 Operation: After a brief discussion on whether or not pilots
needed to be lit members decided that on section 507.2.1.1 the following two
sentences will need to be strike through. • - - .. . •- - ;_ -- - .. - . .
Section 507.2.1.2 Exhaust flow rate label: Discussion was raised on how much air
needs to be exhausted by linear foot. Commission Members provided numbers of
Captive Aire personnel to call with any questions regarding this for reference. It was
agreed by members no changes need to be made to this section.
10. Section 507.2.2 Type II hoods: This section is a good reference and no changes
need to be made.
11. Section 601.4 Contamination prevention: It was decided by members that no
changes need to be made to this section.
12. Section 602.2.1 Materials within plenums: It was decided by members that no
changes need to be made to this section.
13. Section 603.7 Rigid duct penetrations: It was decided by members that no changes
need to be made to this section.
14. Section 603.9 Joints, seams and connections: Discussion was raised on the duct
tape listed and it was agreed no changes to be made to this section.
15. Section 928 Evaporative Cooling Equipment: It was decided by members that no
changes need to be made to this section.
16. Section 1101.10 Locking access port caps: Discussion was raised on this section.
Jim Biewer&Pat Hudgens will check with manufacturers and get back to Raoul.
Based on manufacturers answer this section will either stay as is or be removed.
Dave Mulcahy asked commission members about furnace cabinets as far as the
department drop on the filter. Raoul will draw something and email it to the committee
members; amendments can be done in the next meeting.
NATIONAL FUEL GAS CODE
Raoul said all these changes were minor and did not feel these needed to be discussed
commission members agreed and no changes need to be made.
ENERGY CONSERVATION CODE
After a brief discussion on high efficiency vents for furnace to be separated, members
agreed no changes need to be made.
5. ADJOURNMENT:
A motion was made by Jim Biewer to adjourn the meeting at 3:38 p.m. seconded by Pat
Hudgens.
Next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at 2:00 p.m.

MINUTES
March 06, 2012
1. CALL TO ORDER:
The meeting was called to order by Pat Hudgens at 2:04 p.m. in the second floor south
conference room.
ROLL CALL:
Members Present: Richard Beebe, Jim Biewer, and Pat Hudgens
Members Absent: None.
Staff Present: Steve Bone, Raoul Johnston, Antonio Lopez, and Dave
Mulcahy, and Ron Sessions.
2. MINUTES:
A motion was made by Jim Biewer to approve the February 22, 2012 minutes, seconded
by Richard Beebe. Motion passed unanimously.
3. NEW BUSINESS:
Ron Sessions with the Fire Department talked to the Heating Committee members about
section IMC 510.7 Fire Suppression exception#2, specifically semi-conductors and
requested the committee members to delete exception#2. It was decided by members to
delete this exception.
4. APPROVE AMENDMENTS TO 2012 ICC MECHANICAL CODE, 2012 ICC
RESIDENTIAL CODE CHAPTERS 12—24, AND 2012 NFPA 54 NATIONAL
FUEL GAS CODE:
Members started discussing the reviews. Commission members voted on amendments
for the 2012 ICC Mechanical Code and 2012 Mechanical Sections to IRC, these changes
to include change for fire. A motion was made by Jim Biewer to approve amendments
including the fire change, seconded by Richard Beebe.
RESIDENTIAL CODE
Pat read amendments and had the commission members check if M1401.3 has everything
that is needed. Committee members agreed to leave section as is.
Commission members discussed whether a drawing would be shown in the amendments
to supply to contractors. Pat Hudgens and Jim Biewer made some calculations on this. It
was agreed by members for section to read system shall be installed per SMCA definition
of an extended plenum duct system including a starting_f tting off main supply.
Raoul said he will draw this up and write the amendments, pages 13 — 18, and then go
" through this with commission members.
2012 NFPA 54 NATIONAL FUEL GAS CODE
A motion was made by Jim Biewer to accept the 2012 NFPA 54 National Fuel Gas Code
amendments, seconded by Richard Beebe.
5. ADJOURNMENT:
A motion was made by Richard Beebe to adjourn the meeting at 3:07 p.m. seconded by
Jim Biewer.
