HomeMy WebLinkAbout1 13 2014 Board of Health MinutesBOARD OF HEALTH CITY OF ELGIN MINUTES OF MEETING January 13, 2014 The Elgin Board of Health quarterly meeting was held on Monday, January 13, 2014 in the first floor conference room at City Hall. The meeting was called to order by Dr. Poulos at 7:35 p.m. Members Present: Dr. Dorothea Poulos, Cynthia Applehoff - Siedsma, Jeanine Seitz - Partridge, Joni Courtney, Dr. Franz Stockman, Edward Whitcomb Staff Present: Brad Bohner, Public Health Coordinator Others Present: Dr. Westeron Stephens Approval of Minutes: Dr. Poulos moved to approve the minutes from the October 14, 2013 Board of Health quarterly meeting with the word manger corrected to manager in the last paragraph. Jeanine Seitz - Partridge seconded the motion. The motion was adopted by a vote of six yes, and zero no. REVIEW OF THE FOURTH QUARTER OF 2013 Wing Stop, D Hangout Bar and Grill, Dollar Tree on North McLean Boulevard, and Big D's Snack Shop opened. The St. Joseph School cafeteria was inspected and licensed. The Elgin Sports Complex on Davis Road opened a concession stand. Dulce Vida Bakery closed and reopened as City Life Bakery. Alexander's Restaurant reopened after an extensive remodeling. The Larkin Centers on Larkin Avenue and on Sports Way closed. Roques, Summit School Daycare, and Ravenheart Coffee also closed. Approximately 5 pounds of food was discarded from the Golden Corral due to temperature violations. Jim Bob's BBQ on Wheels was fined $500 for operating an unlicensed catering operation. Burger King on South Randall Road was fined $350 for failing to provide grout to their kitchen floor after 7 reinspections. The building owner and business owner of La Casa de Pollo Asado were fined $50 each for failing to obtain permits to correct plumbing violations. The Public Health Officer met with officials from the Kane County and McHenry Health Departments to conduct a site visit of the Dream Kitchen in Elgin. The purpose of the visit was to see how shared kitchen operate, and to discuss different methods that local health departments might use to licensed and inspect each client using a shared kitchen. Page Two Minutes of Meeting January 13, 2014 YEAR END REPORT The yearend report was discussed. Mr. Bohner noted that the Elgin Health Division currently licenses twice as many food handling establishments as they did twenty years ago, and issues twice as many temporary and seasonal temporary food handling permits as they did ten years ago. Mr. Bohner stated that Vector Disease Control International provided mosquito control for the first time for the Kane county portion of Elgin and most likely would return for 2014. Although the Health Division did not have an intern to assist with inspections, all required inspections and complaint investigations were completed in a timely manner. Finally, the Kane County Health Department reviewed the City of Elgin food protection program for compliance with the Illinois Department of Public Health Local Health Protection Grant Rules. While the County has indicated verbally and by email that the City remains in compliance, a formal letter to that effect has not yet been provided. MISCELLANEOUS Mr. Bohner stated that he had talked with Michael Isaacson, the Assistant Director of Community Health for the Kane County Health Department, and with Randy Reopelle, the Parks and Recreation Director for the City of Elgin regarding the Elgin Board of Health's desire to focus on improving personal health in Elgin with a focus on reducing childhood obesity through proper nutrition and increasing physical activity. Mr. Reopelle stated he is the director of Activate Elgin, a city -wide initiative to provide all sectors of the community opportunities for physical activity, to encourage healthy eating, and to reduce obesity. Activate Elgin currently has several partner organizations and Mr. Reopelle suggested the Board of Health could become a partner in this program. Ms. Applehoff - Siedsma stated she contacted Jackie Caul, a dietician at Provena St. Joseph Hospital who leads a program called I'm Reducing Obesity in Children, or IROC. Ms. Applehoff - Siedsma stated she will forward the program information and power point presentation to the Public Health Coordinator and other Board of Health members. Dr. Poulos stated she will talk to Mr. Isaacson as she is a member of the Kane County Advisory Committee. She also asked that Mr. Bohner set up a meeting time with Mr. Reopelle to discuss the Board of Health's possible role in Activate Elgin.
