The Elgin Board of Health quarterly meeting was held on Monday, April 13, 2009 in the
Community Development Conference room at City Hall. The meeting was called to
order by Chairman Hirsch at 7:30 p.m.
REVIEW OF THE FIRST QUARTER
In January, court cases were completed on two properties with stagnant pools. The pools
were treated by the health department throughout the summer for mosquito larvae and
were in compliance by the time the court cases started. In February, La Baguette bakery
completed their remodeling and is now Panipaste bakery. In March, Trefon's restaurant
moved from Main Lane to Larkin Avenue, and The Gyro Place opened in Trefon's
previous location. Prairie Rock Brewpub and Three Princess Mobile unit closed. A fire
in the Larsen Middle School cafeteria resulted in the closing of the cafeteria and most of
the food being discarded. Food is brought in hot from Ellis Middle School and served
immediately as the cafeteria is still closed.
Mr. Slaby discussed restaurant inspections scores and that when critical violations are
noted during an inspection it lowers the sanitation score. A restaurant is closed if its
score is below 60, or if the establishment has a utility interruption, severe unsanitary
conditions, or a food borne illness is ongoing at that establishment.

OTHER BUSINESS
Mr. Slaby stated that the city of Elgin will keep the food safety program and not turn it
over to the Kane County Health Department as was previously planned. The City will
raise their fees for retail food stores, food service establishments, and all other food
licenses. The Health Department will work closely with Kane County to ensure Elgin is
meeting all requirements of the food safety program that are required by the Illinois
Department of Public Health. Changes may be necessary in the Elgin Municipal Code to
help make certain the two departments will work closely with each other.
Mr. Slaby then announced that he would retire at the end of May of this year since the
Public Health Officer position is being eliminated. The entire board congratulated Mr.
Slaby on his twenty years of service with the City and wished him well with his
retirement.
There being no further business to discuss, the meeting was adjourned at 7:53 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Brad Bohner, Sanitarian
