Notes from November 10, 2015 Work Session
Meeting
Celebrated "National Bike Month" with full schedule of activities in May
Celebrated "Bike.Walk.Move: Elgin Week" with full schedule of biking and
walking activities from June 21-28
Staffed booth and bicycle corral at Bikes & Bites and Art & Soul events
Staffed booth at Activate Elgin's "March Into Health" Expo, ECC's
Sustainability Fair, Downtown Elgin Harvest Market, and Elgin Earth Day
events
Member Darin Anderson completed training and is a League Certified
Instructor (LCI) with the League of American Bicyclists
Promoted "Smart Cycling" through distribution of League of American
Bicyclists Smart Cycling Quick Guide, Illinois Bicycle Rules of the Road,
and Ride Illinois Bicycle Safety Quiz
Gave bike safety training to Boy Scout Troop #567
Participated in "Safety Saturday" with the Elgin Police Department and
AAA
Attended Illinois Bike Summit and NACTO Urban Bikeway Design Guide
training
Gave presentation to Northwest Municipal Conference Bicycle and
Pedestrian Committee
Interacted with agencies and advocacy groups including, Kane County
Bicycle and Pedestrian Committee, Northwest Municipal Conference
Bicycle and Pedestrian Committee, Ride Illinois, Active Transportation
Alliance, Trails for Illinois, Trails Linking Communities, Elgin Area
Convention and Visitors Bureau
Helped distribute 70 new bicycles, helmets and locks to residents of the
Elgin Housing Authority
Facilitated gifting of 30 new bicycles and helmets to youth at the Elgin
Boys & Girls Club
Provided comment regarding bicycle and pedestrian accommodations for
the South Street Extension, East Chicago Street Rehabilitation, Route
25/1-90 Bridge Replacement, and Route31/Route 20 Bridge Replacement
projects
Greatly expanded number of "likes" and viewership of our Facebook page
Links to web and facebook pages were improved, and information on web
page was expanded.
2016 The Year Ahead
Armstrong, Heinmiller and Manheim met on November 10th to discuss possible
projects and initiatives for 2016. The following is a list:
City Council adoption of Complete Streets Policy (being considered in
conjunction with update to the Elgin Comprehensive Plan)
Complete installation of bike racks in downtown Elgin (previously awarded
grant project will add 80-90 bike racks, coordinate distribution with DNA
and business/property owners)
Expand our public education/bike safety campaign efforts (reach out to
Boys and Girls Club, Elgin Housing Authority, Scouting groups, Elgin
Youth United)
Offer an adult cycling class (coordinate with Elgin Parks and Recreation
Department)
Plan Bike Route 4 through Elgin Sports Complex and SC expansion areas
work with Elgin Parks and Recreation Department with master planning of
expanded sports complex)
Update 2008 Bikeway Master Plan (can be done in-house by BPAC and
community -at -large, with emphasis on LAB Bicycle Friendly Community 5
E's and LAB feedback on 2014 BFC application)
Offer more social rides (bicycle scavenger hunt, east and west side history
loops, family rides)
Assist Kane County on Fox River Trail Signage Plan update and
implementation (work with local stakeholders to recommend appropriate
FRT wayfinding signage for Elgin area)
Assist Activate Elgin in implementing Mayor's Walking Challenge
Build upon and improve our web and Facebook pages
Continue with the types of programming/events we have offered or
participated in during past years
Design and publish an Elgin bike route map (money was raised to match a
grant from the Sustainability Commission)
Purchase and install a bike maintenance station(s) along the FRT
Work with local businesses to expand inventory of supplies for bike repair
and maintenance
Recruit new committee members
