Helwig, City Manager SUBJECT: Reimbursement of Firefighters for Membership in Health Clubs PURPOSE To request that Mayor and Members of the City Council consid- er whether or not reimbursement for the cost of membership in health clubs should be continued in light of the establish- ment of a Fire Department physical fitness program. BACKGROUND To encourage physical fitness, one of the benefits full time city employees have had for many years is reimbursement for the cost of health club membership (up to 50% of a YMCA mem- bership) . Last year, City Council approved a physical fitness program in the Fire Department using monies from Foreign Fire Insur- ance Tax to purchase equipment. In discussing the various aspects of the program and the costs, it was believed to be understood that the health club reimbursement plan will be discontinued. However, firefighters have now questioned the above understanding and would like the reimbursement program to continue.
